Why the Dukan Diet really does not work

First of all, for those who do not know me well, let me make clear that I am of those who think that there is scientific evidence to believe that a reduction in carbohydrates (especially refined sugars) and a controlled increase in proteins may serve to modulate and adjust the diet in some people who need to lose weight. This link on proteins and in this link about refined carbohydrates spoke respectively on both issues, so before you attack me, I recommend reading them.

Well, after this introduction, now I'll get the article. In all these years I have resisted talking about the Dukan Diet because I do not want to advertise, but after listening to many debates and discussions that all you create is confusion, I have finally decided to do so.

I have an acquaintance who works in the world of construction. And another that has followed the Dukan diet. Surely you are wondering what to do one thing and another. Let me explain in a few paragraphs and I'm sure you too will see the relationship. The first friend I'll call the second Constructor and Dukaniano. Okay, I have not broken my head about the names, but it will be easier to follow the thread.

This is the brief history:

Constructor decided to pursue construction when we were still almost teenagers, because he was unable to devote a lot of years studying. He learned quickly what it takes to be a professional guild and thanks to known and nearby people got their first jobs. In no time he was able to start his own business and began to make money as a construction professional.

Furthermore, Dukaniano decided on the Dukan Diet after a friend had recommended it tested. The success achieved with little previous diets made him think he had little to lose by testing it, so I bought the book, read it in a couple of days to work and got.

Constructor progressed in your business without having to do anything but work doing what he knew. He worked a lot, but thanks to the construction sector was a runaway horse, his business grew precipitously. The orders came and economic outcomes multiplied. Before long he was allowed to change his life and get things you never thought that others had difficulty decades, a seemingly stable and lucrative business, so I got carried away and enjoyed a solvent and at ease years, allowing things and hobbies previously did not even know existed.

Dukaniano also achieved visible results quickly. The first day was thinning very fast and within months lost lots of kilos that resigned, had almost given assumed. That weight loss made him feel better than ever and although diet was quite restrictive with some types of food, it was not in amounts so still without starving, that was what was scarier. He was carried away by the guidelines of the French doctor and spent a happy and fulfilled time, reaching a nearby body look what he had always wanted. He started the last phase of the diet, called stabilization, almost that dream weight.

Constructor was a typical victim of the housing bubble. When it exploded, all orders disappeared and revenues plummeted. He had gone to work and make money fast, forgetting other necessary to consolidate a future for their business activities. Did not think of analyzing risks, diversifying markets, products and services and to create a team of people to furnish value in developing new products or retain customers. Just made works, many, wherever they came from, and made money. So when the work disappeared, so did money. Not only was left without a living wage, the problem is that he was unable to face a lot of debts he had contracted, blindly trusting that everything would remain the same.

Dukaniano remained a while at a reasonable weight, but as the months passed, the fourth phase of the diet, the stabilization was not as effective as the previous and the trend was reversed. As with most diets, whatever type they are, kilos fought for back little by little, at first slowly, then faster. The first weight increases the offset quite fluently, eating for a few days pure protein, but this strategy also slowly began to lose effectiveness. He tried all kinds of combinations and variations of the different stages, but the results were getting worse and in the end I had the feeling that everything was fattening. So, almost without realizing it, the kilos back one by one, even with a kilo of tip and moral worse than ever.

Well, here I come. As you have noticed, in both stories there is a common denominator: rapid and dramatic results are achieved without work or develop necessary to support them. And that usually end in certain failure.

The Dukan Diet works. Sure it works, how it worked in the construction business, arguably the pitch of the diets. At least in the short-medium term ketogenic diets tend to be effective for weight loss and in this case, being also low in fat, get quick and dramatic results. And to be honest, there is little scientific evidence to show that by following this diet for a limited time will be any health problems in healthy people. It is likely that the benefits of the weight, if this is important, are older. So it is not to scare anyone with exaggerations and apocalyptic threats.

But make no mistake: The Dukan diet phases in which more slimming (the first two) is very restrictive, because it is not a ketogenic diet either. Like all other diets of this type eliminates almost all carbohydrates, but also reduces very significantly vegetables and fats. The refined carbohydrates worries me less (for the reasons I explain here), but the restriction of vegetables and fat is more relevant, especially if applied for too long, as it can lead to nutritional deficiencies.

But this is almost secondary, because the highlight of this method is that, at one point, it stops working. As failure is precisely the most difficult moment, his last phase, he calls stabilization, to be followed for the rest of our lives to maintain weight. At first it seems that at this stage you can eat normally, serving only three rules: Eat protein day a week, take a little bran every day and do not use the elevator. I say "seems" because Dukan is thoughtfully imprecise. On the one hand says you can eat normally when these three rules are respected, but otherwise recommended to consider all that has been learned during the other phases. What does this mean? Let each one interprets. On the internet you can find many interpretations, but usually it is understood in two ways:

1 Back to eating like before but following the three rules.
2 Following a rather restrictive and like any of the previous phases diet in addition to the three rules.

And what is usually the result? The first choice of just regaining the lost weight. And second, if you are able to maintain a restrictive diet can keep the weight (at least) and if not, just leaving it out of boredom or monotony or because they are hungry (mostly). We will, in the fourth phase, the house of cards collapses.

In other words, the worst of this diet is that the principles on which it is based are not sustainable long term. To most people it does not teach you how to change habits (food and other) to eat right and good nutrition, getting your metabolism to properly regulate itself and feeling satisfied. So when the system fails, they will not be able to find a solution.

Putting my opinion aside and returning to the scientific perspective, the reality is that although there are many studies showing that very low carbohydrate diets are used for weight loss in the short-medium term (the early stages of Dukan are of this type, as well very restrictive), there is none that proves that the French guidelines for final stage work equally. Not one. And it would be very simple, comparing two random groups continue their normal diets, but one with the three added rules. Do not think it's a matter of impossibility to do with all the money that should have already amassed could make a few (the Atkins foundation at least this has been more consistent, funding a lot of them). And remember all Dukan advocates who are telling me that has not been proved that the fourth phase not work, those who have to prove that something works is the one who says, as I explained in the previous article thinking. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proofs.

As icing on the cake, in his books also incurs hardly explainable statements and errors, which give a lot to think about their rigor. For example, limiting the salt in a ketogenic diet almost certainly results in dizziness and nausea, because metabolism consumes more sodium. Or recommend low-fat dairy to prevent weight gain in a short statement based on science, as explained in this previous article.

Okay, you might think "understood, but rather be thin next month and the rest of my big fat life from today." I understand, especially if, like most, you have tried everything with unsatisfactory results. Or if you've come across bad nutrition professionals, which also exist, as in any other profession. But believe me, there are far better and superior long-term performance solutions, although they are more progressive.

Obviously, the more successful I consider to be based on science and the most rigorous and recent research. To diseƱarala and apply it you have all the necessary information in the articles published regularly in the sister blog What the science says diet and in the books I have written on the subject (available at this link), but not the only one. So I recommend that you keep looking for good professionals who can help you find your way. Do not believe the proposed Dukan is the best.
